List Broker, What a Broker Does and How It Can Help your Business
If your company is engaged in any sort of current marketing endeavour, you may already know how vital it is to first find the right business prospects, and then follow up on these. To do this, mailing lists of individuals who have shown an interest in a certain product or service are extremely valuable. A list broker is someone who functions as an agent of these lists, who negotiates business between direct marketing consultants and the keepers of these lists. These marketing campaigns may be undertaken using a number of different methods, including phone calls, emails, or direct mail.

However, these days the majority of marketing takes place online. Therefore the most successful list broker will be the one who has the valuable email lists of contacts. These lists will usually contain the bare minimum of information such as a prospect’s name and email address, although some are more extensive. Those could include such information as the prospect’s age, sex, marital status, and buying patterns, among other information. This could have been gleaned from online surveys that have already been taken, or from analyzing which website the prospect has visited in the past few months.

Once you have gotten in contact with a list broker and have obtained your mailing list, you’ll need to find a way to reach out to these prospects and capture their attention. A significant majority of emails are sent straight to the junk mail folder, so be careful what type of language that you choose to use. Sending out special promotional offers, catalogues, or coupons are all typical first points of contact with potential clients that you have obtained from a broker. Be careful of whom you do business with, and where the broker has obtained the list that they are offering to you for sale. The best brokers will not have readymade lists of prospects to spam, but instead will craft the list for you using their own contacts.

Be sure to ask about their sourcing methods ahead of time to ensure that the list broker is offering a worthwhile product. Ask for references if necessary, to hear from other clients about how they do business, and how effective their lists have been in the past. It’s also a good idea to compare different pricing options between brokers, to give you more bargaining power. The final list obtained can be an extremely valuable tool in business, so it’s worth taking some time to conduct initial research.
